Finding training to help you qualify as an approved driving instructor

You may find it difficult to qualify as a driving instructor if you do not have any professional training.  Most people train with a driving school or an organisation specialising in this area.  However, you don't have to take training if you don't want to.

When to take training

Before committing yourself to an instructor training course, check with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) whether your application to start the qualifying process has been accepted.

How to find training

You may want to contact several instructor training schools to compare their fees, policies and suitability to work with you.  Not all instructor training schools are suitably qualified or experienced in providing training to trainee driving instructors so choose carefully.

After you have decided on your instructor training school

You should not sign a contract unless you are satisfied that the training and costs meet your needs.  If you have any doubt, you should seek professional advice from a solicitor or national association.

Pass rates for the qualifying tests

Before committing to a course you should be aware of the national success rates, which are reasonably low.  However, this is only the average and not necessarily that of each provider.  In 2010-11, the pass rates for each of the three qualifying tests were:

  • Theory Test Part 1 = 47%
  • Test of Driving Ability Part 2 = 48%
  • Test of Instructional Ability Part 3 = 34%

* Part 3 results accuracy level 88.9 per cent as at 10 May
